Gambia News : Gambia’s trade minister laments LDCs’ low capacity to access markets

Apr 22,2010 by

gambia The effective participation of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) is always constrained by inadequate institutional and human capacity not only to participate in trade negotiations, but also to increase their ability to have access to markets for export, The Gambia’s Minister of Trade, Regional Integration and Employment said here on Monday.

Abdou Kolley made this statement at the opening ceremony of a three-day capacity building workshop on trade and regional integration organized by the Ministry of Trade, Regional Integration and Employment in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Banjul.

Colley told participants that the training was intended to build the expertise of relevant officials and policy makers on trade and its related matters and enhance skills on trade mainstreaming and negotiation.

According to Colley, the training will expose the participants to analytical tools that will assist them to properly analyze and reach a common conclusion on the Gambia’s position on trade issues being negotiated. He noted that it will add value to their efforts and strategies meant to increase the country’s production base.

Colley pointed out that the developing and least developed countries record low level of effective participation in international trade. He further stated that the World Trade Organization (WTO) has made progress in this area by providing a legal framework and modalities in ensuring that the multi-lateral trading system is fair, transparent and participatory.
