Gambia News : Gambia University holds convocation ceremony for more than 200 graduates
The University of the Gambia held its 5th convocation and graduation ceremony at the Independence Stadium in Bakau, about 14 kilometres outside Banjul, the capital with the passing out of more than 200 graduates.
The colourful and solemn ceremony, which was presided over by President Yahya Jammeh, saw the passing out of 125 graduates in various disciplines, and 92 others with certificates and diplomas.
Speaking on the occasion, President Jammeh, who is also chancellor of the university, told the students that their graduation spelt an important milestone in their education, “being the end of one journey and the beginning of another.” He reiterated the importance of collaboration between the government, industry and the university. He cited the recent provision of scholarships by the Gambia Ports Authority for science education.
President Jammeh advised the graduating students to deepen their sense of responsibility and direct their actions to solving problems rather than creating them.
“People now look up to you and you should not abandon them for greener pastures,” he said.
The occasion also witnessed the awarding of honorary doctorate degrees to two prominent Gambians; the minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Musa Bala Gaye and a prominent businessman, Amadou samba, for their contribution to national development.
