Gambia News : Musician emerges Gambian 'Man of the Year 2009'
Jaliba Kuyateh, the popular kora player and leader of the Kumereh Band of Brikam, has emerged 'Man of the Year 2009', organised by The Gambia News and Report weekly magazine.
Kuyateh emerged the first Gambian musician to receive the award.
A press release obtained by PANA here on Sunday, signed by the Publisher of Gambia News and Report weekly magazine, Mr. Sweabou Conateh stated that Kuyateh won the award because of his innovation in the music industry.
With medium education background, he developed kora music to a level never known for this brand of music, standing out as the most innovative, the most creative and the most fascinating in today's Gambia and the entire sub-region.
Conateh stated further that Kuyateh had been known to perform the rare feat of singing and playing the kora simultaneously and can perform acrobatic displays while playing the instrument, sometimes even using his teeth or leaning as he plays it.
According to him, watching the awardee in action is a spectacle one cannot easily forget, stressing: 'with your overwhelming stage presence, you flawlessly swing around, jump up and down and dance rhythmically while at all times in full control of the kora as you play it.'
Conateh pointed out that Kuyateh uses his prolific performance as a musician to espouse cultural values, through populist songs replete with words of wisdom and guidance as well as progressive undertones for national unity and development, such as women's affairs, education, health, gender empowerment and the environment.
