Gambia News : 86 Nigerian technical aids corps members arrive Gambia
Head of Chancery, Nigerian High Commission in the Gambia, Mr. Obase B. Okongor, has confirmed the arrival of the 2010 first batch of the Nigerian Technical Service team on a technical mission support to The Gambia invarious fields, ranging from education, health, agriculture and others.
The Nigerian volunteers were received upon arrival at the Banjul International Airport by a delegation, led by Okongor, who deputized for the High Commissioner, Mrs. Esther John Audu.
According to Obase, the 86 volunteers will be helping The Gambian government in various capacities for a period of two years.
He said the involvement of the Nigerian Technical Aids Corps (TAC) members in Gambia followed the bilateral agreement signed between the two countries in 1982 when the first batch of 12 Nigerian volunteers came to Banju to render technical assistance, especially in the fields of agriculture, education and health.
He pointed out that the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and The Gambia started before latter got its independence, while diplomatic relationship was formally established in 1965.
Since then, he said, the relationship has been growing from strength to strength.
'Nigeria has been supporting The Gambia in various fields of security, military, police, Immigration and Customs. We have a wonderful bilateral relationship at both bilateral and multilateral levels with a lot of high level exchange visits,' Okongor said.
Okolo Edwin, the team leader, said their mission was to share their expertise with their Gambian counterparts.
He said: 'We are happy to come to The Gambia and we will make sure that we fulfill our mission which is to give technical assistance to the government of The Gambia.
'At the moment, the highest number in this group is in teaching. We will support the education sector. In due course, nurses will be coming to share their experiences with their Gambian brothers and sisters."
