Gambia News : ActionAid chief visits Gambia

Feb 26,2010 by

gambia Ramesh Singh, the chief executive officer of ActionAid International, said here Thursday that his visit to The Gambia was to pay respect and express gratitude to the government for its support for ActionAid operations in the West African country during the past years.

ActionAid is an international anti-poverty agency whose aim is to fight poverty worldwide.

Speaking while visiting vice president and minister of Women's Affairs, Dr. Isatou Njie-Saidy, Mr. Singh said that ActionAid was able to do excellent work in Gambia over the years due to the excellent support it received from the government.

"I had the opportunity to discuss with the vice president on various issues of interest. We raised issues about Beijing +15, of which I hope that the vice president will support and bring on the issues of possibility of implementing the UN General Assembly resolution of establishing a baseline for women in The Gambia," he said.

To further enhance its operations in the Gambia, Mr. Singh said ActionAid established a board of directors, made up of credible, reputable, competent Gambian citizens.

The board, he explained, would provide greater support to the country director and her team.

He highlighted some of the achievements made by the Gambian branch as the construction of schools, cooperatives, supporting women gardeners and capacity building among others.
