Gambia News : African Commission gears up to observe Africa human rights day
The Banjul-based African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights has
on Wednesday published plans to commemorate Africa Human Rights Day on
October 21, 2009.
In a press statement issued
here, it states that the day has been set aside by the African Union to
commemorate the entry into force in 1986 of the African Charter on
Human and Peoples Rights, otherwise known as the Banjul Charter.
The theme for this year’s event is “Human Rights Education—a Right for all”
The Commission has outlined a series of activities to
mark the day including sports events, cultural activities and a march
past of civil society organisations, NGOs, university, secondary and
primary school students and other stakeholders on October 21.
Also a radio and television quiz competition for senior
secondary schools on October 21, an interactive TV discussion on
television on the role of the commission in the promotion and
protection of human rights in Africa.
According to the published statement, the commission
aims through these activities and events to sensitise the public of the
rights enshrined in the African Charter, the functions and activities
of the Commission, and to entrench in the youth the spirit of fair
play, positive competitiveness, determination and solidarity inherent
in sports.

- i hope this will encourage the african leaders to respect human rights. There is no freedom of speech nor is there any democracy. The politicians are always right! it seems.
