British Gambia: Royal Marine Soldier Faces Charge in The Gambia

One Simon Martin Luckay, a Briton believed to be an officer of the British Royal Marines, was yesterday arraigned before Principal Magistrate Moses Richards of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, charged with idle and disorderly conduct, as well as assaulting a police officer.
The offence specified that on 14th August 2007 at Kairaba Police Station Mr. Luckay conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace. In addition, the charge continued, the accused assaulted one Saja Jawo, a police officer, while the latter was executing his duty.
According to the facts of the case as adduced by Sgt. 870 Touray, the incident happened on 14th August 2007. The accused, who was reportedly robbed by some people, allegedly chased one Alhagie Ceesay who ran into the premises of Kairaba Police Station. While on the pursuit of his quarry, the accused allegedly found Officer Saja Jawo and other officers on duty. Sgt. Touray further stated that the apparently exasperated Mr. Luckay, assaulted officer Jawo as the police officers tried to calm him down.
However the accused was later discharged following the complainant’s withdrawal of the case against him.
