Gambia News : Daughter of former Gambian president dies, laid to rest

Mar 21,2010 by

gambia Naceesay Jawara, the 50 year old daughter of the first President of The Gambia, Sir Dawda Jawara, who died recently in the United Kingdom, was on Thursday laid to rest at the Christian cemetery in Banjul.

Her funeral drew a large crowd of mourners and sympathisers.

Born in Banjul on 30 December, 1959, the late Naceesay died in England where she had been resident up to the time of her demise on 6 March, 2010.

The second girl and third child of Sir Dawda and Lady Augusta Jawara, she did her high school education in England where she also pursued further studies in African history and anthropology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University.

After her university education, she was employed by the Home Office in the UK where she rose to the position of immigration officer, posted to branch offices in the Dover area which covered duties at Calais, France.

"She was an unassuming, kind and caring person. Her love of family was supreme as demonstrated during her last and final visit to her homeland last December to celebrate her fiftieth birthday ...with the entire family around her," her biographical account stated among other things.

Naceesay’s funeral ceremony, who lost her mother much earlier on, attracted a large crowd of mourners.

Speaking at the occasion, her father, ex-President Jawara thanked all those who sympathised with them at their daughter’s untimely demise.

He also thanked President Yahya Jammeh who wrote a letter of sympathy to him, his Vice President Isatou Njie Saidy who led an official delegation to the family house and the entire government for condoling with them at their irreparable loss.

  • I would first send my condolence Sir Dawada Jawara and his family. And i hope this picture tells Gambians about Mr President and his course. Former President was a good and hard working man, but his follower where not doing their job. God bless you

  • It is great to see all Gambians coming together on a day like this.We are not bound to live for ever, therefore coming together in good and bad times and doing what is right for our Country should be a civil duty for all of us. Nice pic Jawara/Yahya
