Gambia News : Female lawyers urge Gambians to fight violence against women
The Female Lawyers Association of The Gambia (FLAG), on Saturday
urged Gambians to work toward combating violence against women in the
country.
In a statement issued to the press
ahead of the International Women’s Day celebrations on Sunday, the
female lawyers said, "Recently in The Gambia, brutal murders have taken
place against women, the acts being committed by the very men of the
society, whom the women have bestowed themselves to, for love, care and
protection".
The female lawyers indicated that they have observed
that in The Gambia, for cultural, religious, or traditional reasons,
women are less inclined to report domestic violence against them.
They said there is need for more evaluation to asses the effectiveness of violence prevention measures.
"FLAG believes that advocacy for victims, better
awareness of violence and its consequences among health workers, and
wider knowledge of available resources for abused women (including
legal assistance, housing and child care) can lessen the consequences
of violence"’; the release states.
The female lawyers concluded by expressing their
resolve to continue campaigning for laws that will address the issues
affecting the womenfolk of the country.

- Fellow Gambians can anybody tell me what is the use of this woman njie saidy in our society or government, besides openning workshops and workshops and workshops, its really getting boaring of this njie saidys face and her stories of africa, africa, africa, there is a say that goes:BEFORE YOU DANCE ABROAD OR OUTSIDE MAKESURE YOU FIRST DANCE A YARD OR AT HOME,I put it easy, before you share out makesure it begins first at home ok.
The Gambian Vice President, Isatou Njie-Saidy, on Wednesday told delegates at a sub-regional conference on the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme and Cross Border Trade being held at the Paradise Suites Hotel in Banjul, that women traders and entrepreneurs engaged in cross border trade, experienced several difficulties, that not only undermine the potential of their activities, but also hamper the development of cross border trade and the regional integration process.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the one-day workshop on the validation of a study on the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme and Cross Border Trade, Ms Njie-Saidy said the core of the integration process in West Africa, has been the promotion of regional trade, through market and monetary integration, and very closed political cooperation, characterized by the free movement of persons, goods, services as well as capital.
VP Njie-Saidy remarked, “Today’s event falls within the framework of the 2nd phase which has targeted women traders from The Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Senegal and Mali”.
So ma question is?Is this woman not reading the news in the country,in which the people are in terror and fear, especially our woman back in the gambia, today we come to an extend where criminals in our society and forigners from Guinnea or you name it,come in our country and abuse our poor elderly and moreover raping our women, and i thought she being vice president and moreover waman, she should be the first figure to react or speak to these SICK THINGS HAPPENING IN OUR COUNTRY,before SIR HALLIFA SALLAH or anybody in the country.
So ma question to fellow gambians is can anybody explain or tell me what this woman is contributing in our society?
Or is she there only to do read in the paper what her office secretary writes for her.
Do she have noting to say,or is she sooo naive?.
thanks.
