Gambia News: Plymouth College Students Donate Supplies For The Gambia
Students of Plymouth College this week loaded a cargo container with 385 boxes filled with supplies to be sent to a village in The Gambia in West Africa. The boxes were packed with clothes, books, tools and enough building materials to construct a new health post.
Students, teachers and volunteers spent two hours filling the container at Ford Park in Mutley after over a year of raising money for it.
The boxes will go to Kerewan Samba Sira - a village in which the students have built a school for more than 420 students over 22 years.
"The container's contents cost £1,680 which the students have raised over the past year with various charity events," said David Compton, outdoor activities manager. The new health post will be supplied with equipment from St John Ambulance, along with supplies pf medicines.
David Compton has been visiting the village every year for the past 22 years, and next month 12 Plymouth College students will be going with him.
"We make a point of everything we do being sustainable," he said.
"Pumping a huge amount of money into a charity and then leaving it just doesn't work, so I'm going to go there and give them the boxes myself."
The Gambian government requires all schoolchildren to have a code of dress in order to receive an education, so one of the most important things they have given is school uniforms.
Mr Compton said: "Every year we go back we do something that is relevant to their needs from the year before."
Earlier this year the college was visited by the engineer of the project from The Gambia, Denver Bah.
