Gambia News : Gambia marks International Women's Day
Gambia Sunday joined the globe in commemorating the International
Women's Day with President Yahya Jammeh highlighting his "government's
commitment" towards "women empowerment and development," national
broadcaster - Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS) monitored
here relayed.
The celebration, which included a parade by women groups and gender
activists, was held at the July 22nd Square and was witnessed by
Gambia's First Lady, Madam Zeinab Jammeh, Parliament Speaker Fatoumatta
Jahumpa Ceesay and other top government officials.
Vice
President Isatou Njie-Saidy, who read President Jammeh's speech,
stressed Gambian government's efforts toward uplifting the
socio-economic status of women and girls in the society.
According
to her, this is reflected on government's policy of appointing women in
top decision-making bodies and positions in the country.
To
buttress the point, the Gambian leader cited the appointment of a woman
as Vice-President as well as Speaker of Parliament and scores of
cabinet female members.
In the security sector, Jammeh revealed that women have not been left behind.
He spoke of mass promotion and training packages enjoyed by women serving in various units of Gambia's sector.
He
also pointed out that female soldiers have been given chance to serve
in peace keeping missions along with their male counterpart.
"The role of women in our national development process can not be over-emphasised," the Gambian leader reiterated.
By extension, women within the sub-region and beyond continue to contribute immensely regarding development process, he added.
President Jammeh also spoke on the challenges faced by women worldwide.
Speaking
of the importance of the day, he said: "International Women's Day is an
event when women celebrate the achievements" registered towards "women
empowerm e nt and development."
