Gambia News: Juwara Calls for More Explanation on Gamtel/Gamcel Sale

As news of the recent 50 percent
sale of Gamtel and Gamcel shares to Spectrum Company has barely settled down,
Lamin Waa Juwara, the NDAM leader, has called on the government of The Gambia to
furnish more details concerning the issue, noting that the Press Release issued
by the government is not detailed enough.
According to Mr Juwara, the
disclosure by government that it has approved a strategic partnership for
Gamtel/Gamcel in a bid to salvage the institutions is not enough. He added that
the disclosure that Gamtel was near bankruptcy and is heavily indebted is news
to him.
“Let them tell the people what had
happened and what the said strategic partnership comprises of,” he
stated.
“I think every government owes its
people an explanation. Gamtel was highly cherished in this country. For it to be
said to be near bankruptcy and heavily indebted is news to me. They should tell
the people what went wrong,” he said.
To Mr. Juwara, Gambia’s problem is
not the Jammeh regime, but the opposition. He asserted that the Gambia lacks a
solid opposition, adding that there is not a single opposition party that has
the confidence of the people.
“You have interest groups, both home
and abroad who think that whatever they say is what is going to happen. There is
no issue more important to the Gambian opposition today than making a thorough
research and trying to find out and accept what went wrong,” Juwara concluded.
