Gambia News : Gambia committed to child empowerment
Gambian Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Mr. Abubacarr Gaye, has
said vulnerable children need equal care and protection and to enjoy
their childhood, saying the government is committed in empowering
children.
Gaye made the remarks here on Tuesday at the opening of a two-day
national forum on orphans and vulnerable children (OVC), organised by
the Department of Social Welfare, in collaboration with World
Initiative for Orphans (WIO).
According to him, the conference will among other things, review the national plan of action on OVC.
"Parents
have the fundamental right to protect the children and where they fail,
society has a responsibility to intervene," he stated.
"The
country has a comprehensive law, which seeks to protect the rights of
all children in the country," he said, citing the 2005 Children's Act.
Speaking
earlier, the Director of Social Welfare, Mrs. Fanta Bai Secka, noted
that it was important to strengthen the capacity of families to care
for orphans, l amenting that many children missed their childhood
because of many factors.
Mr. Maarten G.H. Brekelmans, the WIO
President, said "around 2025 we would face about 300 million direct
orphans and around 100 million indirect orphans in the world."
