Gambia News : Gambia gets 2.64 million euros for food security
Gambia has been granted 2.64 million euros by the European Union-World Food Programme (EU-WFP) for food security under an agreement signed in the Gambian capital, Banjul, on Wednesday.
It was signed by Abdou Kolley, Gambian Minister of Finance and Ms Helene Cave, the European Union Chargé d'Affaires in Banjul.
Kolley said part of the money had been earmarked to support the implementation of an ongoing WFP project and for the creation of a vulnerability and analysis mapping.
He said this was in line with government's identification of key necessary actions in the sector following an inter-agency World Bank-Food and Agriculture Organisation-WFP Assessment and Country Action Plan identification mission on soaring food prices carried out in 2008.
According to him, the project, which will start soon, is aimed at extending the coverage of food security net mechanisms through a safety net intervention; impr ove the targeting and response mechanisms for assisting vulnerable populations most affected by the food security and financial crisis; and help protect vulnerable households from declining purchasing capacities and food price shocks.
The minister said the country's recent financial crisis had exacerbated the problems associated with food security as it had led to further declines in government revenue and reduced economic activity.
Kolley added that the main sources of income stemming from remittances and the tourism sector have declined, saying "this has resulted in The Gambia being ide ntified globally as one of the most vulnerable countries."
Ms Cave said the total amount for the food security is 4.45 million euros while Gambia would also receive 76 million euros to cover macroeconomic support, sectoral policies in the field of infrastructure and governance.

- Well Jammeh is capable of creating police and army jobs which no one is force to take. But thanks that he is not invading countries and sending to kill in the name of democracy in foreign countries. Do we comment on that? No is not to our interest.

- It seems the only jobs this govt is capable of creating is police and army jobs... am really skeptical about giving billions of dalasis to a regime that feels it is absolutely unaccountable to its people
