Gambia News : Gambia police arrest beggars
Police on Monday arrested beggars in the streets of the capital,
Banjul, Ndella Mboob, a disabled street beggar, confirmed to PANA, but
the beggars have described it as “constant harassment and
discrimination” against them.
According to Mboob, she and other beggars were approached by police
officers who told them that the country was now developed and therefore
had no room for beggars.
Mboob, who is married to a visually
impaired man with whom she has four children, indicated that she has no
other means of a livelihood.
She said if an alternative means of earning an income were available, she would abandon begging.
The
president of the Gambia Federation of Disabled (GFD), Mr. Muhammad
Korah, told PANA that the beggars were human beings with families and
responsibilities.
He said it was not the wish of his
organisation or individuals who were visually impaired always to be on
the streets begging, but they had no way out.
According to him
the Gambia Organisation of the Visually Impaired (GOVI) and Gambia
Association of Physically Disabled (GAPD) were involved in small-scale
businesses for their members.
He expressed the hope that gradually the practice of begging by visually impaired persons would be a thing of the past.

- Gambia is not a developed country. Britain is a developed country but has many beggars in larger cities. Sometimes they are genuine. But some are too lazy to work. As are some of the people on benefits - both British and immigrants. Punish the lazy.
