Gambia News : Gambia vice president calls for cooperation on livestock development

gambia Gambia's vice president Aja Isatou Njie-Saidy on Friday called for collaboration between West African ministers in charge of livestock management and development to address challenges facing sector. She noted that the region had been plagued by a long spell of drought, and faced threats of bushfire and deforestation among a host of natural as well as man-made problems.

The vice president was speaking at the official launch of the Sustainable Manage ment of Endemic Ruminant Livestock Project in West Africa.

Njie-Saidy said the regional project had come at an opportune time, as the sub-region could not afford to be complacent in taking measures to ensure sustainable preservation and enhancement.

She said there were close two million cattle and 1.5 million small ruminants in 20 sites covered by the project.

Njie-Saidy said close 2.4 million people, mostly farmers in livestock management, would benefit adding that it was also expected that by the year 2013, the project would contribute significantly to food security assurances and poverty reduction through channels that would increase meat production by 38% and milk production by 30%.
