Gambia News : Gambia will be self-sufficient in rice production, says Jammeh

gambia Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has assured that his coun try will be self-sufficient in rice production in three years with the introduction of new varieties of rice and assistance from Taiwan. According to the pro-government newspaper, Daily Observer on Wednesday, Jammeh revealed this Tuesday during a meeting with Taiwanese Ambassador in Banjul, Richard Shih, and officials who are on a technical mission in Gambia.

The Gambian leader said he had told his people many times of the possibility of making the country self-sufficient in rice production.

"But to be quite honest, nine years have pass and it doesn't seem we could do that unless we employ concerted and serious efforts to achieving it," he said.

Jammeh therefore called on his agricultural officials to do more in ensuring that the goal was achieved, emphasizing: "it must happen and it has to happen."

He also called for commitment from Gambians, saying: "It is a question of commitment. It will require a mass sensitisation for attitudinal change."
