Dec 12,2006 by

gambia

The First Lady, Madam Zineb Yahya Jammeh together with her daughter, Mariam Jammeh yesterday joined Gambian children in celebrating International Children's Day of Broadcasting, at the GRTS building, along the MDI road, Kanifing.

The occasion was also graced by the Vice-President and other Secretaries of State.

The celebration was to encourage and promote children's participation in media programmes, like broadcasting, to give them a conduit to express their views and opinions.

Speaking on the occasion, Chery Gregory Faye, Unicef representative in The Gambia expressed delight in celebrating this day and also congratulated GRTS for winning the ICDB regional award.

She reminded the gathering of the utter threat that AIDS represents to our future, noting that everyone should therefore join this global campaign, with this year's theme, "unite for children, unite against Aids to save our children".

Cheryl Gregory Faye also appointed Jaliba Kuyateh a Unicef goodwill Ambassador and also presented an award to him.

For his part, Jaliba Kuyateh expressed delight at the recognition and appealed for people's support and called for better care and protection for the welfare of Gambian children.

Satang Nabaneh, Secretary General of the Young People in the Media said the media plays a very imporant role, as it gives children the opportunity to have their voices heard. She also described it as a powerful tool to fight against the exploitation and abuse of children..

The First Lady, her daughter and the Vice-President were then given awards. Dagain Bittaye, a student delivered the vote of thanks.
