Gambia: First Lady Awarded At ICDB Celebrations
The First Lady, Madam Zineb Yahya Jammeh together with her
daughter, Mariam Jammeh yesterday joined Gambian children in celebrating
International Children's Day of Broadcasting, at the GRTS building, along the
MDI road, Kanifing.
The occasion was also graced by the Vice-President and other
Secretaries of State.
The celebration was to encourage and promote children's
participation in media programmes, like broadcasting, to give them a conduit to
express their views and opinions.
Speaking on the occasion, Chery Gregory Faye, Unicef
representative in The Gambia expressed delight in celebrating this day and also
congratulated GRTS for winning the ICDB regional award.
She reminded the gathering of the utter threat that AIDS
represents to our future, noting that everyone should therefore join this global
campaign, with this year's theme, "unite for children, unite against Aids to
save our children".
Cheryl Gregory Faye also appointed Jaliba Kuyateh a Unicef
goodwill Ambassador and also presented an award to him.
For his part, Jaliba Kuyateh expressed delight at the
recognition and appealed for people's support and called for better care and
protection for the welfare of Gambian children.
Satang Nabaneh, Secretary General of the Young People in the
Media said the media plays a very imporant role, as it gives children the
opportunity to have their voices heard. She also described it as a powerful tool
to fight against the exploitation and abuse of children..
The First Lady, her daughter and the Vice-President were
then given awards. Dagain Bittaye, a student delivered the vote of thanks.
