Gambia: Lady Charged With Common Assault

One Ndey Njie last Thursday appeared at the Banjul Magistrates’ Court where she was charged with the alleged offence of common assault.

According to particulars of the offence, the incident unfolded on 14 May 2007, at the Police Headquarters in Banjul. The particulars went on to state that Ndey Njie was alleged to have contracted a second marriage whilst her husband was away in Europe. The accused, the facts of the matter revealed, went to a Cadi court to express her intention to divorce her husband, claiming that the husband had abandoned her and he was no longer interested in the marriage.

The court was informed that upon the husband’s return from Europe, he also went to a Cadi court to seek advice.

‘The matter was later reported to Kairaba police station for clarification but the police there later referred it to Major Crimes Unit in Banjul where the accused, her first husband and the husband’s father went for discussion.”

“While there waiting for the discussion to begin, Ndey retorted to her first husband’s wife that she had no share in the case and should, therefore, keep quiet as the issue was between the Adams and Njies. But the present wife responded that she was not talking to Ndey but her husband. It was there that Ndey rushed to slap her in the face. She was consequently arrested and charged.”  

 The case was then adjourned to 11 June 2007.
