Gambia News: Rain Causes Disaster in The CRD

Gambia Journal- About three hundred people in the Sami village of Dobo and the nearby town of Kuntaur are still left without shelter after rains last week destroyed scores of homes. Many of the displaced persons are still taking refuge at a school in Dobo. A Gambia Journal correspondent who visited the area on Monday wrote that the downpour was the heaviest in more than a decade and had destroyed scores of houses and rice granaries. He added that despite several meetings by the so-called Regional Disaster Committee have led to little material support to the distressed. He added that though the area is prone to such disasters during the rainy seasons, the preparedness appeared to have been minimal.

He also wrote that stretches of feeder roads have been washed off and that many rice farms risked been destroyed. Perhaps in compensation for the late coming, the rains have been more torrential and precipitation than the average in most areas of the country.
