Gambia Nigerian Community: New Executive Call for Compatriot Support
By Malafie Badjie
The newly sworn in executive members of the association of the Nigerian community in The Gambia have called on all Nigerians in the country to support them to achieve the aims of the association.
According to the secretary of the executive, Martins Agbambu, the interest and social wellbeing of all Nigerians in The Gambia is uppermost in the plan of the association.
But this objective could only be adequately realised if Nigerians in The Gambia gave their full support to the association and the executive, he said.
“We have many good plans. It is an association funded by members’ subscription and or donations,” Mr Agbambu said. “I am asking all Nigerians in The Gambia to register and be card carrying members; that is the sure way to execute our plans.”
He also said their plan includes the production of a Nigerian News Journal for especially the Nigerian community in The Gambia.
Since they are living in The Gambia, he said, they would want to be recognising and awarding outstanding female science students at the University of The Gambia and the award would be known as M3, named after the Nigerian High Commissioner to The Gambia, Mariam Marina Mohammed.
They also plan to build a Nigerian Institute of Management that would offer and give certificate in computing and management courses, he added.
This, he clarified, would be affiliated to Nigerian and other overseas universities.
On immigration, Agbambu said plans are underway to see that Nigerians are fairly and justifiably treated by the Immigration in The Gambia.
“We intend to go on sensitization exercise to get all Nigerians to see the need to be law abiding and to regularise their status and pay their taxes,” he disclosed.
He thanked H.E. Mariam Mohammed and her staff, the committee that conducted the election of the executive members and all Nigerians, for their support and cooperation during the election.
“We will not disappoint them,” Mr Agbambu assured.
