Gambia: Notorious Shopbreaker Jailed

Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of the Kanifing Magistrates' Court on Monday convicted and sentenced one Kebba Jobe, a notorious for shop-breaking to a three-year term.

According to Police Prosecutor, 1748, Mballow, the incident took place in the early hours of February 23rd, 2007 at the Serrekunda suburb of London Corner, where the accused person, together with his friend- still at large jointly broke into a shop belonging to one Alhagie Bangally Jaiteh.

According to him, Nfamara Colley and Saikou Saine, both personnel of the Gambia Police Force met the two accused persons at a shop where they found some dubious items outside the shop, casting doubt in their minds.

According to Police Prosecutor, 1748, Mballow, the officers: Nfamara Colley and Saikou Saine confronted the accused persons and tried to get them arrested when Kebba Jobe's colleague managed to escape.

He told the court that the accused was later taken to Serrekunda Police Station where a cautionary statement was obtained from him.

In his plea of mitigation, the accused begged for mercy, adding that he promised that this will be his first and last to engage in such nefarious activities.

In his ruling, Magistrate Jammeh said: " Having found you guilty of shop breaking , I hereby sentenced you to a three-year term, " he said.

According to Magistrate Jammeh, shop-breaking is a cruel and evil act, adding that this will serve as a deterant to other thieves in Serrekunda.
