Gambia: Gambia's Support to Taiwan's UN Bid Appreciated
The diplomatic stance of The Gambia in favour of the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a well known fact. President Jammeh's commitment to Taiwan UN bid has been demonstrated in the country's diplomacy which has sparired no efforts to put the issue in the global forefront.
His Excellency Crispin Grey-Johnson, Permanent Representative of the Republic of The Gambia to the United Nations along with other pro-Taiwan allies addressed on October 23rd, 2006, a letter to the President of the General Assembly and Secretary-General. The letter was directed towards lodging a protest against the General Committee's serious violation of the rules of procedure of the Genreral Assembly on September 12th, 2006. In fact, the said letter was circulated among the offices of the UN officials and member states as an explicit document requesting for a legal opinion.
Reacting to this development, the Embassy of the Republic of Taiwan, in a missive sent to the Offfice of the President at State House, registered its "compliments to the Department of State for Foreign Affairs" and " expressed its profound appreciation" to the government of The Gambia for its supportive stance towards Taiwan in its UN endeavors this year."
Along with The Gambia, the Permanent Representatives of Burkina Faso, El Salvador, Honduras, Malawi, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Nicaragua, Palau, Saint Kits and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sao Tome and Principe, Solomon Islands, Swaziland and Tuvalu all co-signed the letter and took it up with the UN General Assembly.
