Gambia : Ultra-Modern Eye Care Centre Inaugurated
The Vice President, Dr Aja Isatou Njie-Saidy, last Friday inaugurated a regional Eye Care project in Kanifing.
The centre, known as Sheikh Zayed Regional Eye Care Centre, is a result of fruitful collaboration between the governments of Senegal, Guinea Conakry, Guinea Bissau and the Gambia with support from Sight Savers International and the Sheikh Zayed Foundation.
Speaking at the occasion, the Vice President Dr Aja Isatou Njie –Saidy, who deputised for the President Dr Alhaji Yahya Jammeh, thanked the government of the neighbouring sister republics for the shared strategic vision and foresight in promoting peace and security as necessary conditions for health improvement.
She said, “The spirit of our collaboration has its basis in our cultural affinity, our fraternal ties as well as our common adherence to the principles of good neighbourlines.”
According to her, the development of the district eye care services in the sub region has proven to be an effective instrument to control blindness at the district level.
For his part, Mr Simon Bush, Regional Director of Sight Savers International, expressed delight at his organisation’s continued commitment and support to reducing blindness in the Gambia.
He disclosed that a cheque for eighty thousand pounds sterling would be given for the day-to-day running of the centre.
Salim Ubaid Al Dahari, the Acting Director General of Sheikh Zayed Foundation, said his foundation gave priority to health and education in developing countries.
Others speakers at the occasion included Mrs Caroline Hamper, Executive Director of Sight Savers International and Dr Kabba Joiner, Director General of West African Health Organisation (WAHO).
The Sheikh Zayed Regional Eye Care Centre exists to deliver high quality eye care services and to serve as a training centre for primary, middle and tertiary level eye care professional for the sub region. It also engages in operational research for eye disease and eye health interventions and networks with world renowned research centre of excellence for the improvement of its services.
