Gambia : The Gambia Police Force arrest disabled people who beg in the street

Feb 21,2007 by

gambia The President of the Gambia Organisation of the Visually Impaired (GOVI) Mr Muhammed Corra has criticised the Gambia Police Force (GPF) for their arrest of disabled people who beg in the street.
Three disabled people were picked up by the police a week ago.
Speaking at the annual general meeting of the Gambia Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (GADHOH) held at the Brikama Youth Centre on Saturday, February 17th 2007, Mr Corra noted that several disabled people had been arrested this year alone. “It is unfortunate that this year’s general meeting came at a time when the Gambia Police Force (GPF) one of the most disciplined forces in West Africa launched several arrest on disabled people begging on the street,” he said.
He added, “We want to take this opportunity to appeal to the Gambia Police Force to have mercy on the disabled people.”
Mr Corra then commended GADHOH for its wonderful achievements and then urged the government to do something about the arrest of disabled people in the street. He said, “ We must also thank the Gambia government for their support to the disabled people, but we must also express our profound disappointment over the arrest of our three brothers some days ago.”
