Gambia:VP Njie-Saidy Launches FLAG
The Vice President and Secretary of State for Women’s Affairs, Ajaratou Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, recently launched the Female Lawyers Association in The Gambia (FLAG) at the Coconut Residence in Kololi.
In her statement at the launching she said that it was in the best interest of society to address the issues that affect women and children. She noted that government has ratified some international conventions with regard to women and children, as it recognised the role women play in society.
She however observed that domestic violence was not just peculiar to The Gambia, noting that the phenomenon also exists in other parts of the world. She therefore stressed that the rights of women and girls had to be respected.
For her part, Mrs Janet R. Sallah-Njie, FLAG president, said that FLAG is a non-political, non-sectarian, non-governmental and non-profit making association.
According to her, the aim and vision of the organisation is to influence changes to the laws of The Gambia for the protection, well being, and welfare of women and children.
She added that FLAG would equally lobby for gender equality in The Gambia through legislative reforms, public education and advocacy. In this way, she argued, they would be able to enhance and promote the welfare and legal status of women and children and also to promote the principles and aims of the United Nations, the African Union, in respect of women and children.
Justice Abdou Karim Savage, the Chief Justice of The Gambia, praised the female lawyers for the initiative, which he said was long overdue.
Other speakers included Mrs Amie Bensouda, president of the Gambia Bar Association.
Several Secretaries of State, including the Secretary of State for Justice, judges, magistrates, lawyers, members of the diplomatic corps, attended the ceremony.
FLAG Vice president, Mrs Hawa Sisay-Sabally, chaired the occasion.
