Gambia News : Gambian Woman gives birth at JFK terminal

A Gambian woman applying for asylum in the United States gave birth early yesterday morning at Kennedy Airport shortly after arriving on a flight from Gambia, a spokeswoman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.

Fatou Jaw, 28, and her three children were awaiting processing at the international arrivals terminal when she began having labor pains. Using limited English and pointing to her belly, she got the attention of customs agents who called Port Authority police and emergency medical technicians.

As customs agents comforted her with pillows and blankets, Jaw gave birth to a boy before paramedics arrived. Jaw and her newborn son were taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.

A hospital spokesman said Jaw and her son were doing well.

Jaw's husband, who previously received asylum and was waiting for his wife at the airport, took custody of the couple's other children, ages 9, 7 and 4.

The couple had not given their son a first name, the hospital spokesman said.

But he said they have given him a middle name: JFK.
