Gambia News : Gambian leader begins an official visit to Taiwan

gambia Gambian President Yahya Jammeh left Banjul early Sunday morning for a three-day state visit to Taiwan at the invitation of the Taiwanese government, APA learns here.

According to official sources, President Jammeh is accompanied by the high level government delegation which comprises cabinet ministers and other senior government officials.

The Gambia is one of only four African countries which still maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan. The others are Botswana, Burkina Faso and Chad.

The Gambia restored diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1994 shortly after President Jammeh took power through a military coup. Before that, The Gambia had diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China. However, as soon as relations were re-established with Taiwan, the PRC packed and left as they would not accept a two-China policy.
