Gambia News : Gambian muslims celebrate Ashura, New Year
The President of Gambia Moslem Islamic Council, Muhammed Lamin Touray, said the traditional 'Ashura Feast' falls on 26 and 27 December, reminding Islamic faithfuls of the significance of fasting on those days as practised by Prophet Muhammed, PANA reported Friday.
In a statement made available to PANA here, Touray also announced the start of a new year with the sighting of the first month of Islamic lunar calender.
"The council wishes President Jammeh, his government and the entire Gambians a blessed and prosperous Muslim New Year," the statement said.
During the feast, Gambian muslims remember significant events that took place in the past.
Among them is the migration or "Hijra" of Prophet Muhammed from his birth place, Mecca, to Medina.
For Shia Muslims, "Muharram" and Ashura (the first month) is a period of grief and sorrow as they mourn the death of "Imam Hussain" and his companions on the day of "Ashura".
