Gambia News : Gambian opposition MP says parliament fails to play "oversight" role

gambia Gambian opposition parliam entarian Sidia Jatta has blamed the National Assembly for failing to carry out its "oversight functions", Banjul-based private daily, The Point, reported on Monday.

Jatta was reacting to the repeal of Gambia's National Agricultural Development Agency (NADA) Act which was passed in 2006 by the country's lawmakers.

The opposition parliamentarian emphasized the need for lawmakers to be vigilant and ensure that they play an oversight role.

"We must exercise that function, otherwise we will not be serving the interest of the people of this country. NADA was killed from the very moment of its inception. The skilled personnel, which were required to make it move were laid off," he reiterated.

"The repeal of this particular act seems to indicate the fact that we are found wanting in exercising our oversight functions. I am sorry if what I have said off ends anybody, but I have no regret saying it."

Mr Jatta further made reference to another occasion when, according to him, the executive got the parliament to ratify a loan agreement without proper scrutiny.
