Gambia News : Gambian opposition leader tasks Kadhafi on conflicts in Africa

Feb 09,2009 by

gambia Opposition party strongman in Mali, Mr. Halifa Sallah, has tasked Libya’s President Muammar Kadhafi to focus on the promotion of conflict resolution, political and economic integration of the continent, as he heads the continent's main governing body, the African Union (AU).

Sallah, the Secretary General of the opposition coalition political party, National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD), in an interview with PANA here Monday shed light on the appointment of Kadhafi as the new chairman of the African Union.

“The African Union came into being in order to facilitate economic and political integration of the continent but adopted the policy of rotational chairmanship to enable all nations, big or small, to see themselves as part and parcel of the continent,” he explained.

According to him, “If they decided to give the Libyan leader the responsibility of chairperson, I would expect two fundamental things for him to work on -- to promote the political and economic integration of the continent and resolve most, i f not all conflicts in Africa.”

He called on the new AU chairman to facilitate the peace process and the ultimate conflict resolution in trouble regions of Africa, especially in the Central African states of Chad and Sudan where he (Kadhafi) has often been consulted by leaders of those regions to facilitate peace.

Sallah urged Kadhafi to call a conference of African intellectuals to debate the issue of unity government and United States of Africa or the "Federation of African Republics".

“The countries on the continent are still divided and are yet to develop a conce ptual framework on how to create a unity government and to unify Africa. So, fundamentally it is a period of debate and I would like him to enhance the debate during his chairmanship,” tasked Sallah.
