Gambia News : Gambian president declares public holiday to honour U-17 team

This second African cup of the Gambian U-17 squad, after that of 2005 in Banjul, was hailed with outburst of joy throughout the country.

Jubilant people swarmed into the streets, dancing and singing in honour of this national squad.

The Gambia outplayed Algeria in the final thanks to a first goal by Ebrima Bojang (6thmin.) and two goals by Alhassan Camara (21st min. and 85th min.).

Algeria scored their only goal of the match in the 31st minute of the first half through a penalty.

The final was played in Zeralda, a suburb of Algiers, north.

The Gambia, Algeria, Burkina Faso and Malawi as well as host-country Nigeria will represent Africa in the Under-17 World Cup finals to be played in Nigeria in October 2009.
