Gambia News : Gambian soldiers off to Darfur on peace-keeping mission
Gambian soldiers numbering 196 Tuesday departed for war- torn Sudanese
region of Darfur, to embark on joint UN/AU peace-keeping mission,
government mouth-piece, Daily Observer disclosed.
Addressing the soldiers which included five women, Gambian Vice
President, Isatou Njie Saidy said despite numerous international
efforts, Darfur was yet to have lasting peace. "In this regard, my
government's commitment to fulfill its obligations to the ch arter and
principles of the AU/UN and the Gambia Armed Forces' readiness to
participate in peace-keeping endeavours, has been relentless," Saidy
emphasised.
"This trend will continue until peace is achieved and normalcy finally restored in this troubled region."
She
further reminded the soldiers about the crucial role they have to play
in the "humanitarian endeavour" towards finding lasting peace in the
Western Sudan of Darfur.
"You will not only ensure the security
and freedom of movement of the people in your area of responsibility,
but your presence will also bring hope to a people who have been
greatly deprived of their fundamental rights and freedom as human
beings," the Vice President said.
