Gambia News : Gambians Monday enjoy public holiday following draw with Senegal

Oct 13,2008 by

gambia The Gambian President Yahya Jammeh, on Sunday declared 13 October as a public holiday to "properly" celebrate the one-all draw against Senegal in the African Cup of Nations and the World Cup soccer elimination series.

Radio Gambia described the draw as a "historic and unprecedented" victory and was compared to Senegal’s win over France in the 2002 World Cup.

The only occasion when Gambia defeated Senegal in Dakar dates back to 1962 with a 3-2 victory.

Saturday’s draw eliminated Senegal from the World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations competitions to be held in 2010.
