Gambia News : Gambia's VP opens WAJA Excellence Awards
Gambia's vice president Aja Isatou Njie Saidy will deliver the keynote
address at the first edition of the West African Journalists
Association (WAJA) Excellence Awards, to be hosted by the Gambia Press
Union (GPU) here on Thursday, 16 October 2008.
According to a press release issued Saturday by GPU, secretaries of
state, senior officials from the Department of State for
Communications, Information and Technology, WAJA executives, workshop
participants, diplomats, senior Gambian journalists, lawyers,
politicians and friends of the media are expected to grace the occasion.
The
release further stated that the WAJA Excellence Awards 2008 will honour
the best three reports of practicing West African journalists in print,
radio and television categories in the areas of conflict prevention,
peacekeeping and human rights.
Meanwhile, as part of the
celebrations, short-listed participants would take part in the
WAJA-organised sub-regional workshop on “The Role of Journalists in
Conflict Prevention, Peacekeeping and The Promotion Of Human Rights”
from 14-16 October.
“The event is co-funded by the African
Capacity Building Foundation, Trust Bank Ltd, The Gambia, Gambega,
ECObank and the GPU," the release disclosed.
