Gambia News: Guinea Bissau to receive electricity from Gambia River Development
River Gambia Basin Development Organization (OMVG)
will henceforth supply 8 percent of its electricity production to Guinea Bissau,
or the equivalent of 42 percent of the country's energy needs, OMVG's executive
secretary Justin Vieira has said.
"The distribution quotas established
between the four member countries stipulates that Guinea Bissau should get 8
percent of OMVG electricity production, to cover 42 percent of its energy
needs," Vieira is quoted as saying Monday by Pan-African News Agency
(PANA).
The commissioning of the two dams to be constructed before the
year 2012 in the Senegalese region of Sanbangalo along River Gambia, and Guinea
Bissau's region of Koletan along River Konkoure will stabilize the shortage of
electricity in the four OMVG member states, namely, Gambia, Equatorial Guinea,
Guinea Bissau and Senegal.
In total, about 15 transformers will be
constructed in Guinea Bissau to facilitate the transportation and distribution
of electricity across the country.
The government has already formulated
an emergency program which it expects to submit shortly to the West African
Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) for financing.
This program, whose
total financial amount is yet to be announced, is expected to enable the
construction of two electricity power stations in Guinea Bissau
