Gambia News : Jammeh tasks African leaders on peace, stability
Gambia's President Yahya Jammeh has called on African leaders to
maintain peace and stability in their countries to ensure sustainable
development.
The President spoke at the Banjul international airport Thursday,
upon his arrival from the special African Union (AU) Summit in Tripoli,
Libya, on conflict resolution.
We have all realised that
without peace and stability, there cannot be any development and of
course you cannot have the United States of Africa or the United Africa
states as they called it, whilst there are wars between and within
African countries, President Jammeh observed.
President Jammeh
said he made it very clear to the African leaders that unless they
resolve the conflicts plaguing the continent, they were not going
anywhere, adding that he also reminded his colleagues that most heads
of state were responsible for the wars in their countries.
â?Each
time we fight in Africa, we have more refugees, especially children, in
the refugee camps. These children would not go to school and
eventually, they become ignorant, which is our worst enemy.
''These
children are the future leaders, so if they are not educated, imagine
wh at would happen? I think they (Africa leaders) have got the messages
and as we promised, we will take decisions,' he stated.
He
disclosed that at the next AU Summit, African leaders would put in
place mechanisms that can be enforced to stop wars by peaceful means
and, if that fails, force would be used to secure peace.
