Gambia News : Police to Introduce New Measures to Minimize Road Accidents
As the increase in the number of road accidents is a concern to the
public, the Spokesperson for the Gambia Police Force, Asp Sulayman
Secka told participants at a civil society forum held at the Jerma
Beach Hotel. He informed his audience that the police will introduce
new measures in a bid to minimize the rate of road accidents in the
country. The police PRO was speaking while presenting a paper on road
safety.
PRO Secka explained that the police will introduce the re-testing of
drivers as a precaution for renewal of driving licences geared towards
ensuring accident free roads.
He further stated that they have recently introduced 24 hour round
the clock traffic patrols and vehicle checking on the roads to ensure
the roads are free from accident and other traffic related problems. He
added that the police have also increased the number of traffic
personnel to boost the current strength of the police and to ensure a
wide coverage particularly in the Greater Banjul Area.
PRO Secka also added that they have identified and trained police
personnel in the area on vehicle testing with a view to improving the
road worthiness of vehicles plying the roads.
He attributed the causes of the accidents in country to reckless or
careless driving, lack of concentration, use of mobile phones and
neglect of traffic rules. He said good road networks influence
overspeeding and that it is also one of the factors responsible for
road accidents.
The increase in vehicles plying the roads remains one of the greatest challenges faced by the road traffic management, he said.
PRO Secka noted that road safety is a top priority in their service
delivery and that they will continue to make sure those motorists and
other road users comply with road safety regulations and traffic rules.
Lack of attitudinal change has been the main cause of most of the
road traffic accidents, he remarked. To this end he said that the
police has and will continue their usual public sensitisation
programmes with a view to raising awareness on the dangers of ignoring
or neglecting traffic signs. He finally solicited the cooperation of
the public.
