The remains of veteran Gambia broadcaster, Lalo Samateh, were laid
to rest at the Kanifing cemetary near Banjul after he died early Friday
morning at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital following a brief
illness.
Lalo, 66, was one of the Gambia’s
pioneers in the field of broadcasting having joined Radio Gambia
shortly after it was founded in May 1962.
Born a provincial, he was among the early beneficiaries of Western education.
Born in Salikene in Central Baddibu north of the River
Gambia, he later went to school in Banjul and, early in his career as a
civil servant, he was posted to Radio Gambia as one of the first
Mandinka language announcers.
He soon established himself as a popular broadcaster in
this major Gambian language. At Radio Gambia, Lalo benefited from local
and overseas radio courses at the BBC, in Cairo and Radio Senegal.
A versatile broadcaster, he was also one of
the first to benefit from
training in commercial radio and television broadcasting, long before the advent of television Gambia.
Lalo, who is survived by three wives and several
children, occupied several senior level positions at the radio notably
as head of local languages broadcasting at GRTS.
His funeral was attended by cabinet ministers,
colleagues and a large number of his admirers many of whom paid glowing
tributes to his pioneering role, his professionalism, his piety and his
humble ways.
