Gambia News : Rights defenders to meet in Banjul
Defenders of human rights in Africa will hold a two-day conference in Banjul from 7-9 November, according to a statement by the African Centre for Democracy and Human Right Studies (ACDHRS). It said ACDHRS, in collaboration with the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR), both Gambia-based rights groups, will hold a forum on the pa rticipation of NGOs in the 46th ordinary session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights.
The rights organisations will also participate in the 20th African Human Rights Book Fair, according to the press release.
The events which are expected to attract over 100 human rights activists from Africa and beyond will be held at the Kairaba Beach Hotel.
The forum, which will precede the 46th Ordinary Session of the African Commission to be held in the Gambia from 11-25 November, is to foster cooperation among NGOs as well as the African Commission, with the aim of promoting and protecting human rights.
The first theme: "Overview of Human Rights Situation in Africa", will examine the situation of human rights on the continent as well as identify strategies in addressing emerging issues.
The second theme: "Special Interest Groups", will discuss, amongst other issues relating to prevention and prohibition of torture in Africa, the situation of refugees and internally displaced persons in Africa, freedom of expression in Africa, the situation of women's rights, prison and penal reform, rights of child ren, the death penalty in Africa and elections in Africa.
The final theme will be "Networking for Human Rights", which will look at the updates on the Human Rights Council, as well as the Durban Review Conference Against Racism, Racist Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance and the d evelopment of a human rights strategy for Africa.
The African Centre's 20th Africa Human Rights Book Fair will run concurrently with the forum and the Commission's public session.
The objective of the book fair is to give human rights NGO the opportunity to share their materials with other NGOs and to promote networking of human rights organisations on the continent and beyond.
Experts in the field of human rights and democracy on the continent will act as resource persons and facilitators during the forum.
At the end of the three-day forum, resolutions and recommendations will be forwarded to the African Commission for consideration during the 46th session.

- Human right would have the right and power to defend as long as the one they defend does not violate the right of others. But if they violate am sorry because even in the west we have seen what is going on. There is no human right violation in Gambia

- Gambia is really the wrong venue for this meeting....or maybe they just wanna blow more hot air,you know,pass more resolutions and make countless recomendations as is usual with such meetings...the devil couldn't care less
