Gambia: Student dies from meningitis

FRIENDS of a popular Winchester student who died from meningitis last Wednesday are holding a memorial event in his honour on Friday night.

They are donating £5 each to toast Peter Symond's student Ade Gibbs, 19, at the White House bar in Above Bar Street, Southampton.

All the cash raised will go towards his family's wish to have him buried in the Gambia, his home country.

Ade, 19, collapsed on April 11 after returning home to Harestock from a visit to London to meet friends.

Friends say he complained of not feeling well to his mother. She later heard a bang and found Ade on the floor.

The former Perins School pupil was taken to hospital and died in the early hours of Thursday morning from a meningitis virus.

One of the organisers of the event on Friday, Amit Majithia, said: "His parents want his funeral in the Gambia so we want to help out with that. That's the main point."

He said 300 tickets were on sale, meaning £1,500 would definitely be raised, with hopes of more donations at the event itself.

The memorial night on Friday begins at 9pm and is for over-18s.
