Tourism SoS visits Sheraton, others
by Sheriff Barry, - Agela Colley, Secretary of State for Tourism and Culture, has ended her tour at the Sheraton Gambia Resort, as part of her familiarisation tour of the Tourism Development Area.
SoS Colley and her entourage also visited Ocean Bay Hotel & Resort, Bin’s Suits and Self Catering, Fajara Craft Market, Ya Awa Ali Awa Jobe Craft Market, Bungalo Beach Hotel Car Park, the Bird Watchers Association, Terenga Beach, Zam Zam, Jerma, Sun Park Entertainment Project, Bijilo Beach Hotel, and Golden Beach Hotel.
During the tour, Ali Hosny, Food & Beverage Director of Sheraton Gambia Resort, said the five-star hotel had employed 120 Gambians during the AU Summit. He said the hotel would soon start recruiting and staffing, as it would soon be inaugurated.
Ebou Waggeh, Director of Public Relations of Sheraton Gambia Resort also spoke during the tour. At Sheraton, SoS Colley received a warm welcome and was taken on a conducted tour of the infrastructures at the hotel.
She also visited areas in the Tourism Development Area (TDA), identified for future development of the tourism sector. She inspected the state of the coastal erosion around Tanji and Sanyang beaches, before proceeding to Gunjur and the Sandale ECO-Retreat and Learning Centre in Kartong.
Speaking at the end of the familiarisation tour, SoS Colley said she was overwhelmed with what she saw during the tour. She commended the Gambia Tourism Authority (GTA) for the efforts undertaken to develop the TDA.
However, SoS Colley expressed disappointment over the illegal structures within the TDA, describing them as unacceptable.
She was accompanied on the tour by Ida Sallah, Permanent Secretary at the Department of State for Tourism and Culture, Nuha Touray, Deputy Permanent Secretary and Kaliba Senghore, Director-General of GTA, among others.
