Gambia News : You Will Face the Full Force of the Law If,- PRO Secka Tells Drivers

Jan 29,2009 by

Assistant Superintendent Sulayman Secka, Spokesperson of the Gambia Police Force, has called on the general public to help the police in correcting all forms of societal ills that continue to affect the daily lives of people.

These comments by the police mouthpiece, follows series of complaints by commuters on the double fare collection by drivers along the Tabokoto/Banjul highway. He said any driver caught engaging in such acts would face the full force of the law.

Speaking to this reporter, ASP Secka said, “there are lots of ill things going on around our society but it seems as if nobody cares to help the police overcome them.”

He added that people must be ready to help the police by giving them reports of scenes that are going on in our society. “Sometimes the police is not even aware of certain problems in our communities, or even if they do, people refuse to give evidence in court to support the police over those problems,” he said.

According to the police spokesperson, the general public should always be willing to give evidence relating to problems by reporting them to the police as soon as it happens.

“The doubling of fares by unscrupulous drivers should be reported to the nearest police. Commuters can just take the vehicle number, report the matter to the police and be prepared to give evidence in court,” he said, adding that such will help the police in bringing an end to such societal ills.

He however warned drivers to desist from such acts, saying that they should be realistic and help the commuters. “Why cant you be realistic and tell the commuters your exact destination rather than collecting double fares from them which is not fair at all. There is a national tariff for each and every area and this has to be strictly followed by all drivers,” PRO Secka explained.
