The Gambia Radio and Television, GRTS, yesterday announced the immediate increase of the price for kerosene by 75%. The move is said to be in line with the IMF’s call for the reduction of state subsidies of imported goods. This means the price of kerosene which was D12 per liter is now D21 per liter. A state employed economist justified the move by stating that most imported kerosene is now re-exported to Guinea Bissau and that the subsidy is not benefiting Gambians. But when asked why there was no corresponding decrease in the prices of other fuels like petrol and gas oil used by Gambians, the official, who does not wished to be named, called that a “non-starter.” Though the country’s leaders called it a free-market economy government has been heavily regulating prices of petroleum products for ages. Prices have more than doubled in three years, observers say.
