Gambia: Small Grant Programmes To Start Soon
The United Nations Development Program, UNDP, office in Banjul has released a press statement announcing that The Gambia has now been certified as eligible for, GEF, Global Environment Facility’s Small Grants Program. The release states that the decision follows a successful appraisal visit done in November 2006 by a mission of the SGP which held various consultations with government and various community groups. The mission was a response to an application filed by the Gambia Government back in November 2005. Under the Small Grants Program, The Gambia is expected to receive at least US$ 100 000 annually to support community initiatives that contribute to conserving global biodiversity, mitigate climate change, protect international waters, reduce the impacts of persistent organic pollutants, prevent land degradation and generates sustainable livelihoods. The program that will come into effect in three months time , in July 2007, and is to be hosted by the UNDP office in Banjul , the release added. It says that the a country program is expected to be designed, strategies designed and local program management staff recruited before then.
