Gambia: UNDP Officer In Charge Assumes Office
The UNDP office in The Gambia has issued a press release to convey the assumption of office of the new Officer in Charge. The release, dated 10th April 2007, is hereunder reproduced:
The new Officer in Charge of UNDP in The Gambia, Dr. Adama Guindo, has assumed duty. A citizen of Mali, Dr. Guindo holds a PhD in International Relations and a Masters Degree in Public Administration. Dr. Guindo brings to the post wide-ranging experience from the diplomatic service, academia and the international development field. He began his career with the United Nations in 1985. Prior to that, he was Assistant Professor at the University of Niamey in Niger, and Assistant Researcher at the University of Nice in France.
His career with the UNDP has spanned over two decades during which he has served in various management, policy analysis and operational capacities in many countries, first in the Central African Republic and later in Chad. In 1991, he was moved to Liberia as Deputy Resident Representative and two years later, he was deployed to Namibia in the same capacity.
Dr. Adama Guindo was appointed UNDP Resident Representative/UN Resident Co-ordinator and Director of the UN Political Office in 1995, and redeployed to Liberia where he successfully co-ordinated UN operational activities and international partners for the formulation of key national strategies relating to reconstruction and reinsertion of displaced persons. He was very instrumental in the design, planning and monitoring of the July 97 elections to end the civil strife, and in the formulation of a national reconciliation support programme. In 1998, he went on to serve in Madagascar as UNDP Resident Representative/UN Resident Co-ordinator. During the 2001/2002 post electoral crisis, he acted as the main facilitator in the mediation process, interacting actively with the UN Department of Political Affairs in New York, the African Union and the Malagasy2 presidential candidates.
From 2002 until 2006, he served as Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator/Resident Representative, and Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General to Haiti. In 2006, Dr. Guindo was moved to Senegal as UNDP Resident Representative, a post he held until his deployment as Officer in Charge of UNDP, The Gambia.
Dr. Adama Guindo is widely published and is a member of the American National Geography Society, the Association of Le Monde Readers in France, and the Association of Alumni of the Institute for Development Studies in Nice, France. He holds National Awards from his home country of Mali, as well as from Senegal and Madagascar. He has also won Recognition and Merit Medals from Ecomog, the West Africa Peace Keeping Forces.
