Gambia News : Jammeh says Gambia will export food to sub-region soon
Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has disclosed that the country will soon become a major food exporter, saying the country currently exports food to Senegal and Guinea Bissau, among other countries in the sub-region, PANA reported Saturday.
Jammeh said in his end-of-year address, broadcast on the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS) Saturday that the country will be food self-sufficient by 2012, as 2009 was a good agricultural year.
Saying he has confidence in the Gambian economy, the President noted that the country was not deeply affected by the global financial crisis, since its economy was not dependent on international financing.
"I will not accept stock exchange in this country, if we were having stock exchange, by now our economy would have been affected," he said, admitting that the only problem his government has is fuel crisis which is beyond his administration.
He noted that the country's economy grew in 2009 by six per cent and will contin ue to grow.
According to him, the only bad thing in 2009 was the increase in crime rate, warning that the law will deal with those committing crime to the letter.
The country witnessed ten serious murder incidents and numerous rape cases.
"If people think they can come and commit crimes here, they are making a mistake and they are in the wrong country to commit those crimes," he stressed.
The President called on foreigners with criminal intentions to leave the country, because any foreigner caught committing any crime will face the music, before being deported.
Jammeh said further that people commit crimes and hide behind human rights but that will not be accepted in the Gambia.
He declared that human rights' defenders will not be accepted in the country.

- The advancement of the Gambia lies in the hands of all. We must involve ourselves in all faucets of the system and help move it forward. The Gambia is bigger than anyone person, and therefore should not depend on anyone person to move it forward.
