Gambia: Dosh Gets D3.2 Million Drug Boost
ASB Clinic Workers' Samaritan Organisation, a German humanitarian charatable organisation operating in many countries in the world, recently donated D3.2million worth of drugs to the Department of state for Health and Social Welfare.
The drugs which includes Anti-biotic, anti-malarial, gastro intestinal, pain sedatives, asmatic, and eye drugs amongst others where distributed to the Sukuta, Yuna, Brufut, Gunjur, Brikama , Basore, Mandinary, New Yundum, Banjulinding, Sintet, Kanilai , and Mayok Health Centres respectively.
The distribution was conducted with the support of the Central Medical Store and the first phase of the distribution was conducted in early November. The second and theird phase will however, be done in December and January respectively.
Aja Abi Khan, the Regional Health Officer for BCC, KMC and Western Region, said that through their collaboration with devlopment partners, NGOs, Private Clinics and other government health departments following the outbreak of refugees from Cassamance who are currently residing in the Foni villages of Sibanor, Jifanga, Sinteer, Basureh and Kartong, the Regional health team was able to contain the emergency problem.
"We were able to immunize them against minegitise and misles. We used both government facilities and village service drugs to assist them" she said.
At that time, she added, DOSH needed help from partners like ASB, a German Clinic in Dippa Kunda. She said that the regional health team headed by Modou Mbenga, a Senior Health Personnel at DOSH, and SoS Dr Tamsir Mbowe pledged support from ASB under the management of Gudrun Lehmbeck, Project Manager for West Africa to assist DOSH with few drugs to compliment government efforts in the health upon which they acted promptly.
Madam Khan on behalf of the SoS Tamsir Mbowe and Regional health management teams commended the ASB clinic for responding positively to the call. She described them as good partners of DOSH as they have assisted the department whenever the need arises.
For her part, Madam Gudrun Lehmbeck, ASB Clinic Project Manager for West Africa said that when the appealed came, they wrote a project proposal to the Foreign Minister of Germany who approved it and ASB was able to come up with the said amount to purchase the high quality drugs. She further said that the drugs have been brought to The Gambia and will now be delivered to the various health centres.
According to her, this is the second time in two years that the ASB and the German government have helped The Gambia government. She then commended the German government and their embassy in Dakar for the response. She however warned that the drugs would expire in 2010.
