Gambia News: Bill, Milinda Gates-sponsored malaria centre inaugurated

gambia A 307,200 pound sterling malaria centre that was constructed with fund provided by the Bill and Milinda Gates Foundation, has been inaugurated in The Gambia and will house the National Malaria control Programme and the Public Health Research and Development Programme.

Speaking at the occasion on Wednesday, Prof. Brian Green Wood of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said the centre will act as an intermediary between the Banjul based Medical Research Council (MRC) and the National Malaria Control Programme.

The centre will also bring together the practical and applied researches conducted on malaria and blend them with advocacy techniques in order to help control the disease as it is the aim of the Gates Malaria partnership, Prof. Wood explained. . For his part, The Gambia’s minister of health, Dr. Tamsir Mbow reiterated that the government will continue to place health high on its agenda and particularly that of women and children.

The centre is located in the Kanifing Municipality.
