Gambia News : Gambia's First Lady donates D100,000 to 2010 first babies

Jan 04,2010 by

gambia Gambian First Lady, Madam Zinab Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh and the Head of Operation Save the Baby has presented D100,000 cash (about US$ 4,000 ) to the mothers of the first five babies born in 2010, PANA reported from here Sunday.

The five beneficiaries are the first born baby of the year, the first born baby girl of the year, the first born baby boy of the year and the first twins of the year, who each benefitted an amount of D20,000.

The presentation of the cash and other items to the beneficiaries was done by the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Babucarr Gaye at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH) in Banjul.

The event has now become a tradition through which the first lady supports and contributes to the well-being of children and the empowerment of women in the country.

Chairman of Operation Save the Baby, Mr. Tombong Saidy, said since the inception of the operation, a lot has been achieved through the support from the first lady and some laudable institutions who are always ready to come on board to support the initiative.

Saidy said the organisation is also meant to help mothers to give their children the basic needs, especially educational and health care, for the children to get early childhood education without any difficulties during their first beginning of school.

He said the D20,000 gift from the first lady will be divided into two, with each mother given D5000, while the remaining D15,000 is put in a bank account for the child, to which the child will get access after five years.

Mr. Lamin Yafha, the commercial manager of one of the donor companies, Qcell GSM, said the Operation Save the Baby initiative is in line with the corporate social responsibility for the development of the country.

Yafha said the company considered it befitting to support the initiative by contributing its quarter through the donation of D15,000 cash and valuable baby items worth over D15,000 to the mother of the first twin babies of 2010.

He pointed out that the mother will be given D5000, while the D10,000 cash will be put in a bank account for the twins.
